CHEMICAL PEEL

WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL AND WHY TO DO IT?

Chemical peeling works to make your skin tone better and to remove fine lines. This cosmetic treatment is very popular in North America. If your skin is sun-damaged or you have fine lines, facial wrinkles and age spots – a chemical peel might be your solution.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Chemical peeling includes various components that dissolves the top layer of skin and allows the reconstruction of a new one which is fresher, smoother and looks more youthful.

WHAT KINDS OF CHEMICAL PEELS ARE THERE?

There are different depths of chemical peels. It can be superficial, medium, or deep.

Superficial peels:
This is a non-invasive glycolic acid peel offered by our clinic. Over the course of just a few of these effective treatments your skin has a youthful glow. Treatment sessions are short (15-20 minutes) and there is a sensation of minimal heat for a few seconds. Superficial peels don’t require a recovery period however, in rare cases, there may appear just some minimal redness but patients can return to normal activities immediately. For the desired result we recommend several treatments after which you see a noticeable change in your skin.

Medium-depth chemical peels:
This procedure works deeper than a Glycolic Acid peeling, it removes a superficial layer of skin, as a result it reduces wrinkles and makes your look fresh and young. It also helps to reduce and improve superficial acne scarring, though this may require more than one treatment, performed 6 to 8 weeks apart. To perform a medium depth chemical peel a variety of substances can be used, the most common is TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid). Because of the deeper level of peeling, medium-depth chemical peels may cause you a redness and raw skin surface for 5 to 7 days. During this period, the treated area of the skin layer peels off and a new layer grows in its place, so it is strongly recommended that patients clean and lubricate their skin as much as possible. The recovery time is one week, after which make-up may be applied and patients can return to daily activities.

Deep chemical peels:
Deep chemical peels require long recovery period as it causes a longer redness. This treatment is seldom performed and preferred for patients who have deep acne scarring.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A CHEMICAL PEEL?

Prior to treatment, we highly recommend that you consult with an esthetician who will be able to determine, on the spot, if you are a good candidate for this treatment and the intensity of product to be used on your skin. An allergy test should be performed to decrease the risk or redness and potential skin burning.
